Description of Organization:
Odyssey Hospice provides compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness, as well as for their loved ones. Volunteers with Odyssey are an important part of a larger team who recognize that medical/clinical care for patients in the last stages of life, along with psychological, spiritual, and social services for patients and families can contribute to improved life quality.
Description of Service Learner Role:
Volunteers may serve a variety of roles with Odyssey Hospice. Perhaps the most dramatic impact on quality of life a volunteer can provide for a patient is through the immediate, hands-on experience of Patient Care Volunteering. After completing a nine-hour orientation, Patient Care Volunteers may provide companionship, conversation, leisure activities or a quiet, caring presence. You may also use your education and/or area of expertise to aid our patients and program. Your focus can include art, horticultural, massage therapy; music, pet therapy; and life review / legacy techniques such as recording oral histories, storytelling or scrapbooking.
Patient Care Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Odyssey Hospice, along with Medicare, requires that potential volunteers complete a background check, physical, and 2-stage TB test. Volunteers are asked to visit their patient(s) weekly, for at least one semester. We serve patients and families all over Chicago and suburbs. In the interest of time reduction and transport savings, we try to place volunteers close to their home, school or place of work.
