Sustain and Reclaim: Spring Day of Action

More than 300 students, faculty and staff gave back to planet Earth during COD Cares Spring Day of Action "Sustain and Reclaim" Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Action Heroes performed a variety of environmental–friendly activities and learned more about volunteer opportunities with local sustainability efforts.
In just two hours, volunteers:

  • Planted 250 seedlings in biodegradable toilet paper tubes, donated to Cod Community Garden and Hadley Junior High's Garden For Giving, to support Glen Ellyn Food Pantry;
  • Filled 100 biodegradable balloons with milkweed seeds, then popped and released the seeds that will group into milkweed flowers, a favorite of Monarch butterflies and other pollinators;
  • Collected and separated 500 keys to be recycled and repurposed by SCARCE;
  • Collected nearly 200 ink jet cartridges to be recycled by SCARCE
  • Peeled and prepped more than 2500 crayons to be melted down and molded into new crayons by SCARCE. These Super Crayons will be given to children with special needs;
  • Gave 75 pairs of used jeans to the COD Environmental Club, which will donate the jeans to DuPage Pads;
  • Handed in 30 cell phones and more than 25 pairs of eye glasses to be repurposed by Lions Club of Bloomingdale;
  • Donated 600 45s and LP albums to be recycled by SCARCE; and
  • Prepared willow branches collected on campus to be used by artisan to support the efforts of Sustain DuPage.
