COD Professors at the 2015 National Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Four College of DuPage professors presented at the National Collegiate Honors Council Annual Conference, held in Chicago Nov 11-15, 2015. Deborah Adelman (English) Shamili Ajgaonkar (Biology), Chris Goergen (Political Science) and Eva Maria Räpple (Philosophy) presented a panel discussion of their work teaching interdisciplinary seminars on the COD Honors Program. Their talk "Making Unusual Connections: Interdisciplinary Seminars in A Two-Year College Honors Program" highlighted the role that interdisciplinary seminars play in enhancing the COD honors program.
Through discussion and examples, the presentation argued that interdisciplinary learning communities promote critical thinking, encourage deeper understanding of multiple disciplines, and provide opportunities for Honors students to be more engaged with the subject matter, the instructors, and their peers. COD Honors student Sumera Patel joined the panel to talk about her experience in the Honors Seminar "Seed Soil and the Soul," a combination of Environmental Biology and Film as Literature, with a focus on global food and agriculture practices.
