Master’s Track Addictions Counseling Certificate Now Online

The Human Services program at College of DuPage will begin offering its Master’s Track Addictions Counseling certificate online in January.
The certificate is for students who have earned, or are in their second year of earning, a clinical master’s degree in Counseling, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work or a substantially similar field of study. The program requires 18 to 22 credit hours, including 300 to 500 hours of fieldwork.
Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the exam offered by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drugs of Abuse Professional Certification Association (IAODAPCA) to become Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselors (CADC).
Maryann Krieglstein, professor and coordinator of the Human Services program at College of DuPage, said the online format provides greater access to this important certificate.
“Because College of DuPage is one of only a handful of institutions in the state to offer an approved certificate program for Addictions Counseling, we wanted to help as many people as possible receive the necessary training to become certified,” she said.
The Master’s Track Addictions Counseling Certification program is the third Human Services program to be offered online, following the Psychiatric Rehabilitation certificate and the Veterans Counseling certificate.
Jason Florin, Human Services assistant professor, said the Master’s Track certification recognizes the educational level that students have achieved and is tailored specifically for this audience seeking to add CADC to their credentials.
“The traditional Addictions Counseling certificate requires 48 credit hours, but we realize that students with master’s degrees in Human Services fields have already demonstrated a certain high level of knowledge,” he said. “The Master’s Track was designed to help these students not repeat curriculum yet still receive the rigorous training necessary to become CADCs.”
The Human Services program has been named a Center of Excellence at College of DuPage. This designation reflects an academic program or discipline that has passed a rigorous application process to demonstrate significant achievement in such areas as the use of a modern curricula with progressive teaching methodology; enrollment growth over five years; the establishment of academic partnerships, such as collaborative agreements and community outreach efforts; a student success rate that exceeds the institutional average; and improvements based upon student achievements and employer recommendations.
