Scholarship Reception Honors Donors, Recipients
By Jennifer Duda
Kathrine Murphy of Oak Brook (left), spoke at the recent College of DuPage Foundation Scholarship Reception.
A recipient of both the Foundation Needs Based and Returning Adult Student scholarships, Murphy said that without financial assistance, her dream of attending college wouldn't have been possible.
"The Foundation gave me the start I needed when I decided to go to college at the age of 25," she said. "(Donors) are changing people's lives and these scholarships have given me hope and direction."
The College of DuPage Foundation honored both scholarship donors and recipients, giving them a chance to interact and learn about one another during its annual fall Scholarship Reception.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to bring donors together with the students they are helping and to honor and express our gratitude for all that our donors contribute," said Susan Lang Berry, president of the COD Foundation Board.
The Foundation raised more than $400,000 directly for student scholarships and has given 500 monetary awards to student, helping them to realize their dreams of higher education. Additionally, the Foundation has created 12 new scholarships this year, providing additional assistance. During the recent event, donors met with the recipients of their scholarships and shared stories with each other, Foundation Board members and the audience.
COD Executive Vice President Joe Collins said the cost of education has steadily risen each year at a dramatic rate. Given the struggling economy and the rapidly increasing cost, more and more students are seeking financial aid to help fund their educations.
"College of DuPage offers an outstanding education at a very affordable price, but we also are pleased to be able to offer assistance to students in need," he said. "Without support from our donors, many students' dreams of higher education would go unfulfilled."
