Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at College of DuPage

College of DuPage will host a series of events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month from Wednesday, Sept. 6, to Thursday, Oct. 12, on the College’s Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

All events are free and open to the public.

Sponsored by the College’s Latino Outreach Center, Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Student Life, the celebration will include a variety of activities and events celebrating Hispanic art, music and culture.

  • Pizza and Papel Picado: Enjoy pizza while decorating papel picado.
    Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Book Display: Browse a special book display on the second floor of the Library featuring histories and sociological studies on the Hispanic experience.

  • “Tortilla Soup” Screening and Empanadas: Enjoy empanadas while viewing a free screening of the award-winning drama comedy “Tortilla Soup.”
     Wednesday, Sept. 20, noon to 2 p.m.

  • Flamenco Lecture and Performance: Learn about the origins of flamenco dancing and see a live flamenco performance.
    Tuesday, Sept. 26, noon to 1:30 p.m.

  • Tres Vidas Live Music Theater: This performance features a chamber music theater work for a singing actress and instrumental trio based on the lives of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran activist Rufina Amaya and Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni.
    Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. and at 7 p.m.

  • “Beyond Borders” Film Screening: This documentary examines policy decisions that triggered the rise of undocumented immigration into the U.S. and explores the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. as well as the lives of Mexicans living and raising families in the U.S.
    Wednesday, Oct. 4, noon to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m.

  • Salsa Dancing and Student Poster Display: Participants can take a salsa dancing lesson and then show off their new skills. In addition, student-made posters representing different Latino/Hispanic countries will be on display.
