Technical Readiness

Are you comfortable using the computer? The personal computer is the primary learning and communication tool for online courses. You don't need to be a computer guru to succeed, but you do need to have some basic technology skills, such as word processing and using a web browser.

Do you have access to a computer with the recommended software? You will need regular access to a computer, be it at home, on campus, or in a public facility. The college uses the Blackboard Learning System for online course delivery. Refer to Blackboard Software Recommendations and make sure your computer has the necessary setup for working with Blackboard. Some courses may require additional software.

You should have some experience using the Internet. Besides proficiency with word-processing applications such as MS Word, you need to be familiar with browsing the web, sending e-mail and e-mail attachments, and downloading and uploading files. These are necessary skills for success in online learning.

Evaluate your basic computer and Internet skills with the help of a Self Assessment tool.

If you find it challenging to use the computer, get some training in a classroom setting before taking an online course. Enroll in a classroom-based computer course such as CIS 0800, 1110, 1120, 1130. If you need further training in the use of the Internet, visit Learn the Net.
