Backpacking: Alaska's Historic Chilkoot Trail

Relive the historic Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 and retrace the steps of the stampeders as we hike the historic gateway to the Yukon and the best backpacking adventure in Alaska! The 33-mile Chilkoot trail that begins near Skagway Alaska and ends near Bennett in the Yukon Territory of Canada, offers spectacular scenery within a unique historical setting. In addition to backpacking, students will also get to visit Alaska's capital Juneau, cruise a section of Alaska's inside passage and ride on the historic narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. Previous backpacking experience is recommended and students must be comfortable traveling up to 9 miles a day with a 40-pound backpack. A valid US Passport is required.

Field Study Dates: July 9-18, 2013

Fee: $1925 (includes air, rail and ferry transportation, shuttles, 4 nights hotel lodging, trail permits, 5-nights camping, most meals and backpacking/camping equipment)
