Employment and Endorsement
The Interior Design industry, like many professional career fields, is tied to the economy. Fortunately for designers and students, projects are increasing and firms are very busy again. Career opportunities include kitchen and bath design, computer-aided drafting and rendering, sustainable design, advanced lighting design, and universal/barrier free interior design.
Salaries range from $30,000 to $42,000 for entry-level interior design positions. These figures will vary depending on individual portfolio skills and specific career goals. Salaries may be based on the design position or tied to sales performance. Students generally need one to three years, or more, of additional work experience after graduation to establish higher salaries. Professional development may include additional education or passing profession exams of selected career paths and/or state registration requirements.
Successful interior designers must combine design aestherics with strong technical skills. In addition, they need to be detail-oriented, have strong business management ability and possess interpersonal communication skills. They must have the ability to learn new technologies, meet work deadlines and be creative in problem-solving.
