Faculty Spotlight

  • Faculty Spotlight: Kathleen Dexter

“I like to experiment with different teaching techniques and assignments to see which are the most influential on student learning. I emphasize to my students that math makes sense. Once they can reason their way to logical conclusions, they can begin solving problems and, eventually, asking their own questions. And that’s my goal for all my students, that they master the core material and begin asking and trying to answer their own questions. I’d love it if every student were losing sleep over some math question they were trying to answer just because it interested them.”

Hard work and dedication can lead to a more fulfilling life, and I hope this sticks with my students, I’m always impressed when former students come back and are doing well. I’m also inspired and impressed by the dedicated faculty who help our students succeed. As a student, college was such a rewarding time for me, and I now watch my students experience those same rewards. In fact, I tell them I am jealous that they can take more classes!

“I was inspired to become a teacher by my mother who taught me life’s lessons with patience and was always available to assist with homework. I also had inspiring math instructors in both high school and college, and I am inspired by the great mathematicians and my colleagues. I want students to realize that ‘Mathematics is the essence of all life in the universe.’”

I hope my students take away from my classes an increased aptitude for performing mathematics correctly and a more fully developed mathematical intuition.”

"If you work diligently at math, you can get it. I realize that math is hard, time consuming and sometimes frustrating, but you can have fun. My students laugh and I try to use humor to keep the students involved in the mathematical process."
