Faculty Spotlight: Erich Hauenstein

Math always flowed easily for Erich Hauenstein. But he initially didn’t think of it as a career.

“In high school, I had good grades in math but was more interested in sports and girls than in acknowledging my talent in mathematics,” he said. “Finally, during my freshman year in college, I was explaining how to do a math problem in a small five-person study group that met in the library. After I had finished explaining how I had done the problem to my peers, they all piped up how I should be a math teacher because of how well I explained the problem. It was after that experience that I finally realized I had a knack for doing mathematics, and that I should pursue it.”

Prior to coming to College of DuPage, Hauenstein spent one year as a high school math teacher at Cros-Lex High School in Michigan and one and a half years as a temporary instructor at his alma mater, Central Michigan University.

Teaching is a profession that runs deep in his family.

“My grandmother taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Huntington, Ind. My mother taught gifted elementary, both of my uncles were school teachers and my father was Dean of Students at the local community college where I grew up in Port Huron, Mich.,” he said. “Growing up around teachers I believe helps you to develop the craft of explaining and showing how to do things.”

In addition to his family, he is inspired to teach by his former teachers and current colleagues at College of DuPage.

“I am impressed by the wonderful collection of devoted faculty and staff at our College who genuinely desire to impart wisdom and learning to our students,” he said. “I hope my students take away from my classes an increased aptitude for performing mathematics correctly and a more fully developed mathematical intuition.”
