Victor Barron
Major: Surgical Technology

After graduating from high school, Victor Barron began working in the surgery department at Central DuPage Hospital. He also enrolled at College of DuPage.

“I felt very proud of myself since I was the first one in my family to attend college,” he said. “Unfortunately, I dropped out due to family problems and a lack of knowledge of the curriculum and GPA system.”

But his co-workers and the physicians where he worked always encouraged him to return to college, and during this time he developed a passion for the work performed in the operating room. Eight years later and working full-time in the Delnor Hospital ER, Barron returned to COD.

“This time I had no doubt that COD was the best choice to help me achieve my goals,” he said. “I was focused on fixing my GPA in order to get into the Surgical Technology program and earn an associate’s degree.

“The curriculum offered at COD is set up to provide success as long as you are willing to put the work into it. This was important to me since I was also a family man with a wife and daughter at home.”

Barron also met with Kathy Cabai, Professor and Coordinator of COD’s Surgical Technology program, before starting in the program.

“Kathy is not only a very knowledgeable and professional person but also a great friend,” he said. “During the program, I was working full time but thanks to her advice and encouragement, I was able to succeed in the program.”

Barron is now a Certified Surgical First Assistant, a Certified Surgical Technologist and the DaVinci Robotic Coordinator at Delnor. He enjoys being part of a team that gives presentations to local high school students, and when he trains new staff, he invites COD Surgical Tech students to attend the surgical robotic in-service.

Considering he came to the U.S. at the age of 14 and had to learn English, Barron is proud that he can share his knowledge and skills with others.

“College of DuPage is an excellent college and will help you achieve your goals,” he said. “Thanks to the career that I chose at COD, I have accomplished dreams that I thought I would never reach. I go to work to do the job that I love and I have also been able to go to mission trips to help others. What a blessing!”
