Student Spotlight: Vishal Chaudhari
Vishal Chaudhari will never forget the impact his first teacher in the U.S. had on his life.
"Katy Bernard is the one who taught me English and without this, I couldn't have accomplish what I have accomplished today," he said. "Other than teaching English, she also came to all my classes with me so that she could help me with every subject. She is the best teacher I have met in my life and I really appreciate her help."
Now Chaudhari is a Presidential Scholar at College of DuPage, an honor that includes a full-tuition scholarship and enrollment in COD's Honors program and the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.
"It feels great to be recognized," he said. "It allows me to explore new aspects of leadership through Phi Theta Kappa membership and become part of the Honors program."
Chaudhari, who loves to play with numbers and equations, is pursuing an Engineering major. His goal is to earn an associate's degree and transfer to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earn a bachelor's in mechanical engineering. After that, he would like to pursue an MBA and then combine both engineering and business for a career.
Thanks to the start he received from Katy Bernard after moving to the U.S., Chaudhari has developed strong study skills and is applying them to his work at College of DuPage.
"Whether you go to COD or any other college or university, you need to make sure that you are staying on task and focused in classes and on top of all your assignments," he said. "Do not blow off homework thinking it is not important, because homework is the way you are reinforcing what you learn in classes and that is the most important. But that’s not the only thing you should consider. Being involved in different student activity helps build connections with your peers.
"COD’s great club community is helping me to gain deeper insight into my major area. Furthermore, COD has the best teachers who have helped me to focus on my area of interest and are giving me the opportunity to consolidate my resume."
