Student Spotlight: Ernesto Cruz
Major: Paralegal Studies
Ernesto Cruz was inspired to study law by his family.
“I was always making some type of argument with all our conversations,” he said. “That and I’ve always wanted to help people out, and being a paralegal is a stepping stone to becoming an attorney.”
Cruz’s first experience with college was at Benedictine University. But he did not finish his degree and felt that if he was to return to school, it would be to College of DuPage.
“I do not regret that, because having come to COD was a great decision,” he said. “COD is providing me with an amazing education. The instructors are not just teachers, they've worked in the field and have plenty of experience and knowledge to share with us. COD is helping me complete requirements to transfer at a fraction of the cost, it is getting me closer to becoming a successful attorney, and I have met a lot of great people while attending classes here.”
Cruz earned his Associate in Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies with high honors. He is currently employed as a quality assurance/quality control specialist at a telecom firm in Chicago, where he helps with the development of company-wide standards, processes and procedures as well as data modules and provides training.
The Paralegal Studies program prepared Cruz for his future, and he highly recommends College of DuPage.
“The amount and quality of knowledge and skills gained in the Paralegal Studies program is valuable enough to make attorneys want to hire you,” he said. “For any students considering the Paralegal program at COD, I would quote Nike by saying ‘Just Do It!’ ”
