Student Spotlight: Danny Glover
Major: Real Estate/Business
When Danny Glover began taking classes at College of DuPage, he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do.
He started by completing his prerequisites while working full-time. But then a plan began to emerge, and his research and interests led him toward business and real estate.
“I took all of the real estate courses COD had and I ended up buying and renting out two houses,” he said. “I completed my Real Estate Broker certificate in 2008 and also took business and entrepreneurship classes, because I knew I wanted to own my own business and be able to determine my own future. Mr. Udelhofen was probably the best teacher I ever had as he brought real-life success and entrepreneurship into the classroom. This kept my attention and made it much easier for me to learn and stay intrigued.”
It was in his entrepreneurship class that Glover created a business plan to buy his own establishment. When he met with banks to purchase Skuddlebutts Pizza and Catering in Downers Grove, he tweaked that plan and was able to get a loan.
Skuddlebutts has since become a popular local eatery. In 2013, it received the “Business of the Year Award” in the category of Hospitality from the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce.
Glover opened a second Skuddlebutts location in Glen Ellyn and is hoping to sell it as a franchise package. For now, he's focusing on his growing business. In 2015, for example, sales were up 11 percent from the previous year, and the store added an additional catering truck and a pig roaster. In 2016, Glover purchased the commercial space that he previously leased at 440 Ogden Ave. as well as several more spaces. Catering continues to grow from year to year.
Glover is always learning. He has great mentors and is happy about the success of his business. He even thinks about what he would study next at College of DuPage.
“If I were to go back to school, it would be for Culinary Arts,” he said. “COD has an amazing program!”
