Student Spotlight: Danny Glover
Major: Real Estate/Business
When Danny Glover began taking classes at College of DuPage, he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do.
So he started off completing his prerequisites while working full-time. But then a plan began to emerge, as his research and interests led him toward business and real estate.
“I took all of the real estate courses COD had and I ended up buying and renting out two houses,” he said. “I completed my Real Estate Broker certificate in 2008 and also took business and entrepreneurship classes, because I knew I wanted to own my own business and be able to determine my own future. Mr. Udelhofen was probably the best teacher I have ever had as he was able to bring real-life success and entrepreneurship into the classroom. This is what kept my attention and made it much easier for me to learn and stay intrigued.”
It was in that entrepreneurship class that Glover created a business plan to buy his own establishment. When he met with banks to purchase Skuddlebutts Pizza and Catering in Downers Grove, he tweaked that plan and was able to get a loan, completing the deal in 2009.
He then opened a second Skuddlebutts location in Glen Ellyn and is hoping to sell it as a franchise package. For now, he's focusing on his growing business. In 2013, Skuddlebutts received the “Business of the Year Award” in the category of Hospitality from the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce.
Glover said business is growing. In 2015, for example, sales are up 11 percent from the previous year, and the store added an additional catering truck and a pig roaster. Party People also increased its inventory. In 2016, Glover purchased the commercial space that he was previously leasing at 440 Ogden Ave. as well as two more spaces.
“I have a lot of work and learning to do, but I have great mentors,” he said. “If I were to go back to school, it would be for Culinary Arts. COD has an amazing program!”
