Student Spotlight: Kevin Haroldsen
Kevin Haroldsen’s love of building things led him to engineering.
“Seeing all of the math I’ve learned manifest itself as something useful is a beautiful feeling,” he said.
Haroldsen was 14 when he first came to College of DuPage.
“It was the most inexpensive option available that offered higher-than-high school classes,” he said. “I've learned things that I could never have learned at a high school.”
After earning his Associate in Engineering Science from COD and graduated with high honors, Haroldsen is currently studying computer science/software engineering at Brigham Young University. He was able to transfer his associate’s degree and knock out most of his gen eds, leaving him only two classes short of a math and physics minor, which he plans to get.
His ultimate educational and career goals are to develop artificial intelligences with a master's degree from MIT.
He credits College of DuPage and its Engineering program for providing a solid foundation.
“For any subject, go to the teachers who teach the highest-level courses at COD. They obviously have a drive for their subject and care about their students,” he said. “Most of the good ones have master’s degrees or Ph.D.s and love their subject and students. The class sizes are small, and there are no TAs, so you’re guaranteed a more personal experience at College of DuPage. In fact, I miss the small class sizes and being able to go directly to the professors.”
