Student Spotlight: Erik Johnsen

Erik Johnsen
Major: Fire Science
Hometown: Bensenville
Erik Johnsen is wasting no time at College of DuPage.
He's majoring in fire science to become a firefighter/paramedic. In addition, since he's not planning to transfer, Johnsen has other educational goals while at COD.
"I'm taking auto mechanics classes to get ASE certified so I can either work in a shop on my days off from the fire department or just side jobs in my garage," he said. "I'm also in the Welding program to get certified in that."
Johnsen began at COD in fall 2011 as a Presidential Scholar, and he doesn't mind staying at COD a little longer than usual to complete all of his coursework.
"My main reasons for going to COD were the convenience and price, the fact that I didn't need to go anywhere else, and the Presidential Scholarship I was awarded, which is 64 credits of free tuition," he said. "I love learning about things that interest me, so staying a little longer than the regular two years isn't an issue."
