Student Spotlight: Bill Lietzow
Major: Heating, Ventilation,
Air Conditioning, Refrigeration
Bill Lietzow found Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration to be a career field that provided many options.
"No matter what part of the county you live in, there will always be a need for a trained professional in the HVAC field," he said. "This allows for opportunities wherever you plant your feet."
Recognizing that he needed to move his career in the direction he wanted, Lietzow enrolled at College of DuPage and earned two certificates -- in Heating Air Conditioning & Refrigeration/Stationary Operator in 2002 and in Air Conditioning/Service Technician in 2004. Both certificates were received with high honors. He also took several training classes at the Trane Facility in Willowbrook and training at the co-generation plant in Waukesha, Wis.
Now he's employed as a stationary engineer at Elgin Community College. On a daily basis, he works with many different types of HVAC equipment, including two building automation systems. He credits College of DuPage for providing him with plenty of opportunities to earn his certificates.
"The courses were offered at times that were flexible and allowed me to fit them into
my work schedule and family life," he said. "The instructors were all very knowledgeable
and professional. My COD experience, coupled with these certificates, allowed me the
opportunity to study for -- and pass -- the City of Chicago Stationary Engineer license
