Student Spotlight: Shannon McCarthy
Although she is unsure of her major, Shannon McCarthy is glad she chose College of DuPage.
“COD gives me time to figure all that out while providing a great education at an affordable price,” she said. “By offering a wide variety of classes, COD is helping me figure out what I want to study. I am taking an honors environmental biology and ethics class and that has made me really interested in a career in restorative ecology.”
In addition to her classwork, McCarthy is playing tennis at COD and traveled with the women’s tennis team to nationals in 2016.
Her goal is to complete two years and then transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. McCarthy believes College of DuPage is a great place for students who are undecided.
“COD can sometimes be perceived in a negative way because it is not a four-year university,” she said. “But many students are spending a lot of money on going away to school and graduating with a degree they are no longer interested in. It is really important to take the time to find a field that you are really passionate about. Even for students who know what field they are going into, COD provides the same entry-level classes that you would take at a four-year school and at a fraction of the cost.
“COD also offers a lot of clubs and sports that a lot of students and prospective students do not know about. I joined the tennis team and this year we qualified for nationals in Tyler, Texas. It is a lot of fun and a great way to make friends. I would encourage more students to join one of the extracurricular programs that COD offers.”
