Student Spotlight: Gloria Roark

Gloria Roark

Gloria Roark
Major: Biology

Like many students, Gloria Roark came to College of DuPage because she wasn’t sure what career to select.

It was also a financially wise decision after she was named a Presidential Scholar, which comes with full tuition as well as membership into Phi Theta Kappa and the Honors program. Although she initially thought about studying nursing, Roark switched to biology.

“I have a big passion for animals, which is why I changed majors. I’m still thinking about nursing but I may become a veterinarian,” she said. “The big thing for me is to care for others, whether they are people or animals.”

Roark volunteers at a local animal hospital and at the Naperville Humane Society, both of which provide opportunities to learn about a possible future career.

Also providing valuable experience for the future was Roark’s role as the student trustee on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees.

“I enjoyed hearing from students, faculty members and staff and getting their input about the many facets of the College,” she said. “To have the power to say and do something in response to their comments was so humbling to me. Being the Student Trustee allowed me to have greater involvement with the larger issues at the College. It was a good learning experience.”

Roark is now at Aurora University, where she is double majoring in Biology and Health Sciences. She is still weighing options between veterinary school or completing a master’s degree in immunology or epidemiology, and recently she began considering a master’s in education.

“I’ve been inspired by many professors throughout my college career, and I am forever thankful to the professors, administration and staff who helped me get to where I am now,” she said.

Regardless of her choice, Roark is glad that she started her academics at College of DuPage.

“I knew coming to COD was a better choice for me,” she said. “Though it is very large, it feels like a small college, which is allowing me to explore and connect with other students and with my professors on both a professional and personal level.”
