Christine Runge began taking grade-level Homeschool Enrichment courses at COD at the age of 13.

Three years later, through Early Admissions, she started taking college-level classes. In 2010, she earned her Associate in Arts degree and received a full-tuition scholarship to Elmhurst College.

Runge's situation is complicated by a genetic disease that requires daily treatment. Ultimately, she would like to be a systems analyst or a database administrator.

"Once I finish my education, I will be in a good position to enter the workforce," she said. "The tricky part was figuring out how to pay for my education."

Runge credits COD for preparing her for the future. For example, after taking several computer courses, she received a scholarship to Camp Infinity, a week-long science and technology camp for girls that inspired her.

"It opened my eyes to the industry and made me realize I could flourish in that environment, especially as a woman," she said. "I want to be someone who can look at the big picture, communicate with those familiar and unfamiliar with technology, and make computer systems work for people who need them. With all the time I've spent in the hospital through my life, I know how important the computer programs are - if they get stuck, sometimes patients can go without treatment. I want to make sure that everything runs smoothly."

At Elmhurst, Runge joined the national honor society and made the Dean's List her first semester. She graduates in 2012 with a bachelor's in Information Systems.

"I have a lot of options open for work right now, but no firm plans yet," she said. "Everything is very exciting and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

"I honestly have to say that I couldn't have gotten where I am today without COD. Every time I needed help, someone at COD provided me with the answers I needed. I wasn't sure how to prepare to transfer my credits to a four-year institution, but all my counselors had information and contacts who set me on the right path.

"The programs offered at COD are really unique, and I feel COD prepared me for a future career better than a four-year university could."
