Student Spotlight: Justin Syputa
Major: Culinary and
Justin Syputa likes the everyday challenges of the hospitality industry.
He selected College of DuPage for its location and the flexible of its scheduling, earning an associate’s degree in Hotel and Lodging Management.
“The staff at COD was really helpful and hands-on with the students,” Syputa said. “Mary Beth Leone was terrific because she has great industry experience and was able to give you real-life situations.”
After earning his degree, Syputa went right into the workforce and spent two years as the Executive Housekeeper at the Wyndham Hotel in Lisle and then was Director of Housekeeping at the Westin Chicago Northwest. He now works with Virgin and helped to open the Virgin Hotel Chicago, which is the first hotel in the company. In 2016, Conde Nast readers named Virgin Hotels Chicago the best in the U.S.
“I love that I am able to do many different things at the hotel and that I am learning new things every day,” he said. “For any student looking to get into the field, they should be ready to put in a lot of hard work and long hours. The hotel industry can be very demanding but, at the same time, be very rewarding in the long run. Also, never be afraid to try new things and to always learn from your mistakes.”
One new thing Syputa is enjoying is teaching. He taught facilities management in COD’s Hospitality program in spring 2013 and continues to teach in the program.
“I really enjoy the experience of sharing my knowledge with the students,” he said.
