Major: EMT/Fire Science
Shawn Lamb initially took several firefighting classes at College of DuPage after finishing high school.
“Then I went into the military and worked as a firefighter,” he said. “That stopped me for a little while with school. When I got out of active duty, I picked back up at COD and slowly began to build my resume and take the classes I needed.”
Lamb has earned his Paramedic and Fire Investigator certificates and then finished his associate’s degree in Fire Science. He is now a lieutenant with the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District.
“I wanted to learn as much as I could to help better myself, and my crew, on the fire ground,” he said. “This profession is for people who can be there for their community on possibly one of their worst days, and you must be able to do it with a possible life on the line. At COD, my EMT-B, EMT-P and Fire Investigator classes gave me the proper tools to provide care to my community at a high level.
“I just want to say ‘thank you’ for the opportunity to speak on behalf of a student who has been taught a number of skills in his profession at such a great level. Without the Fire Science program, a lot of people would not have the chance to become firefighters or paramedics.”
