Veterinary assistants and laboratory animal caretakers look after animals in laboratories, animal hospitals and clinics. They care for the well-being of animals by performing routine tasks under the supervision of veterinarians, scientists, and veterinary technologists and technicians.
Veterinary Assistant Information Session 2019
Students are required to attend this introduction before beginning the Veterinary Assistant Program. Topics covered include course logistics, expectations, as well as an overview of curriculum, mathematics used in the field, ethics and physical expectations. The information session is free and registration is preferred.

Veterinary Assistant Course Fall 2019
Veterinary assistants are an important part of the veterinary team, working with veterinarians and veterinarian technicians to provide medical care to animals. Students interested in this field can learn knowledge and skills through this course of 150 hours of hybrid learning, including 80 hours of classroom and online instruction. Students engage in the classroom with knowledgeable and experience instructors and learn hands-on skills through lab stations. Students gain real-world experiences through a 70-hour externship and engage with peers and instructors through an online platform.

Externship hours are scheduled to best fit student needs within site availability. Students need to be available to complete the externship. Classes on campus do not meet during this time. Externships most often take place during normal business hours and successful completion is required to graduate. Externship dates are given in the beginning of class to ensure ample time to make necessary scheduling arrangements to complete this important requirement.

Employment of veterinary assistants is expected to grow 10 percent by 2022. Salaries vary depending on hours, certification, experience and location, but average $12.17 per hour, or $23,000 annually.
