How Can I Meet My Accounting Prerequisites?
If you are planning a career in accounting, finance, human relations, marketing, management or sales, you will be required to take a full year of accounting to meet the related prerequisite for admission to the college of business at your school.
Even if you head off to a four-year institution right out of high school, you should consider taking your accounting classes at College of DuPage. Why?
As a resident of DuPage County, you’ll pay in-district tuition for Financial Accounting (4 credit hours) and Managerial Accounting (4 credit hours). Compare our tuition to what you’d pay at your four-year institution!
Financial Accounting (ACCOU 1140) and Managerial Accounting (ACCOU 1150) at College of DuPage transfer to and will generally meet the accounting prerequisites for acceptance into the colleges of business at both public and private four-year institutions in Illinois. (Students at out-of-state schools should check with an advisor at that institution before enrolling.)
- Small Class Sizes
The College of DuPage limits its Financial Accounting classes to 35 students and its Managerial Accounting classes to 30 students. Compare those class sizes to those at your four-year institution (which may range from 100 to 300 students or more).
When can I take these classes at COD?
Typically, successful completion of a full year of accounting (comprised of Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting) is required before you will be admitted into the college of business at your four-year institution. Consider which of the following plans work best for you.
- Summers at College of DuPage
Although most students are more successful in the classroom version of the courses, both courses are also offered online.
- Take Financial Accounting during the summer between your high school graduation and your freshman year.
- Take Managerial Accounting during the summer between your freshman and sophomore years.
- While on Campus during the School Year
Even though you are on campus at your four-year institution, you may be able to fit in an additional course. We offer both of these courses in an online format.
- Take Financial Accounting during your freshman year.
- Take Managerial Accounting during your sophomore year.
Applying for Admission
Once you decide which plan works best, if you haven’t done so already, you will need
to apply for admission to the College of DuPage. It’s an easy 2-step process.
What other classes can I take at COD?
Check with your four-year institution to identify other business courses that you can take at College of DuPage for transfer credit. Depending on the four-year institution, students typically take one or more of the following:
- Principles of Finance (BUSIN 2210)
- Principles of Management (MANAG 2210)
- Principles of Marketing (MARKE 2210)
You may need to provide the catalog course descriptions (linked above). You might also need the syllabus before approval is granted to transfer one or more of these courses to your four-year institution.
Additional information for transfer students is available on the Accounting Program website.
