WBK Engineering, LLC, is a Tribally Owned 8(a) Small Business civil engineering, planning, and environmental resources consulting firm with offices in St. Charles, Illinois, and Battle Creek, Michigan. The firm offers municipal engineering, stormwater management, flood mitigation design and permitting; wetland and environmental resources identification, permitting, and restoration; transportation and structural engineering; and site development planning services for private and public clients.
WBK is part of Bodwé Professional Services, a group of consulting firms wholly owned by the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi. The group also includes Seven Generations Architecture + Engineering, The Steelhead Engineering Company, Blue Star Integrative Studio, Bodwé Federal Services, and Bodwé Technology Solutions. Together in partnership, the sister companies that comprise Bodwé can provide a full suite of professional design and consulting services to clients.
With a decades-long reputation for successfully serving municipalities and other local clients and as a part of the strategic growth plan of Bodwé Group, WBK has recently begun pursuing opportunities to provide engineering services to federal agencies nationwide. Today, a significant portion of the revenue WBK Engineering earns comes as a sub or prime contractor for many state and federal clients, including the US Army Corps of Engineers, General Services Administration, Veterans Health Administration, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, Indian Health Service, and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Leveraging the recently obtained Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certification in Illinois, WBK was part of two teams as a sub consultant that were selected for two Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) projects as a part of Professional Transportation Bulletin (PTB) 209. More recently, WBK was awarded a prime contract for PTB 210, providing engineering for various projects in IDOT’s most complex region, District 1. At the federal level, WBK was awarded a contract for the Bureau of Land Management Alameda Inundation Study and Hazard Classification Title I Services project as a part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA). WBK recently learned that the firm was also certified by the Detroit Department of Transportation as a DBE in Michigan and will continue to grow its transportation practice, aiming to work on transportation engineering projects in Michigan as well.
Setting up the firm for future years, WBK also secured several federal multiple-award contracts with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) starting in 2024. WBK will hold three, five-year contracts: one to complete facility assessment projects; one to perform demolition assessment services at Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) facilities and sites; and one to perform nationwide architectural and engineering services.
WBK Senior Water Resource Engineer, John Witte, PE, CFM explains that “The APEX bid match program and assistance that was provided during the development of marketing material throughout the years has contributed to the success WBK has experienced in procuring state and federal contracts.”
WBK and the broader Bodwé Professional Services Group take pride in recent growth and expanding contracting successes, which stem from its culture, philosophy, and business structure. WBK and the companies of Bodwé have been able to successfully leverage the benefits of Tribal ownership to support the shared mission to grow the economy and legacy of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. These successes not only support the firm’s continued growth but also increase the resources of the Pokagon Band for continued growth and sovereignty.
