Description of Organization
College of DuPage has a precious resource on campus – natural areas. We have one of the biggest on-campus natural areas of any college in the nation! The area consists of approximately 40 acres of prairie, savannah, marsh, and woodland habitat. This habitat resembles the habitat that once persisted in Illinois, 99.99% of which is gone due to farming, development and industry. These areas offer educational opportunities as well as practical applications in the form of plant and animal preservation, flooding and water quality improvement and a cultural connection to our former landscape.
Description of Service Learner Role
There are many roles for service learners. If you would like practical experience working outdoors, there are roles for those interested in ecological restoration activities such as weed removal, planting, seeding, cutting trees and research/monitoring. Also, there are valuable opportunities to work in community engagement. We need to raise the profile of the prairie in the community – this includes Facebook page operation, volunteer coordination etc. These aren’t the only opportunities! Just ask Remic, the Prairie Manager and he can find something for you that helps the student, areas and college!
Organization Requirements
A good attitude is required as well as a respect for nature. When working outside, it is required that workers dress appropriately. No open-toed shoes and long pants and long sleeves are recommended. Water is always a good idea to have with.
