Description of Organization

Northern Illinois Food Bank – a proud member of Feeding America – is the source of nutritious food, innovative feeding programs, and hope for more than 71,500 people each week. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a goal of solving hunger in our 13-county service area, we rely on our generous donors, volunteers, and community partners – the local food pantries and feeding programs, food manufacturers and retailers, companies, foundations and individuals who join with us in our vision for no one to be hungry in Northern Illinois.

Description of Service Learner Role

Product Processing & Food Sorting – sort, evaluate, clean, and package donated food prior to distribution.

Organization Requirements

Warehouse: The volunteer(s) need to be flexible in regard to project, work well in a physical setting, and able to work both with small and large groups. Skills and abilities vary by the type of task assigned; the ability to lift 15-30 pounds is preferred for some tasks while other tasks require light to no lifting. Some tasks require bending, the use of box cutters, reading and writing skills, and the ability to evaluate product. It is important to know that it is an open warehouse setting where standing and some light lifting is required. In addition, those with severe food allergies should contact the food bank to see if accommodations can be made.

All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes in order to participate in warehouse volunteering.

Projects can be accommodated to all ability levels, and can be coordinated by contacting a Volunteer Coordinator.

Number of Placements Available
