Students might work in a number of different areas, and what the student volunteer will do varies with each area.
- If a student worked in Resettlement Services, she/he might assist a case manager with compiling and filing the information needed in the case file on a daily basis, or assistance might be needed in helping a new arrival to obtain a social security card.
- If a student worked in Educational Services, she/he might help to capture data from weekly progress reports, and record the information in the database. There might be opportunities to assist on site in classrooms, or registrations etc.
When students express an interest regarding World Relief DuPage, they should contact World Relief DuPage and explain their area of interest. Then the World Relief Coordinator will speak with the various department heads to see if a program can be tailored to address some of the interests expressed by the student.
Fluency in one of the following would be helpful, but not required: Arabic, Burmese, Farsi, Somali, Swahili, Russian, Kirundi, French or Spanish. Inter-personal and communication skills would enhance your experience, and candidates must be reasonably self-motivated, and have a willingness to engage with immigrants and refugees. Patience with others is extremely important and the ability to accept others without judging them. Some measure of the following qualities would be very helpful: organized, attentive to detail, ability to coordinate various components of a project, flexible, and creative. A car and valid driver's license are required as well.
Willingness to cooperate with the mission and vision of World Relief DuPage. An interest in community development would dovetail nicely.
