COD Natural Areas Work Events

Volunteer your time to restore our natural environment!

We will be performing hand weeding of invasive plants, seed collection and processing of native plants, brush cutting and clearing, and prescribed fires, and other activities.

Workdays

Prepare to work outdoors with the potential for seed processing indoors. Bring water to drink and dress in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Activities include but are not limited to brush cutting, seed collecting, pulling weeds, planting, transplanting and stacking brush. For all sessions, meet in the Health and Science Center (HSC), Room 1324.

Professor Barb Anderson’s students are preferred. All sessions are on Friday in the Bio Greenhouse located at the southeast corner of the Health and Science Center (HSC). Contact Outdoor Lab/Prairie Manager Remic Ensweiler to reserve a spot (only 16 available each day).

Summer Prairie Tours

Learn about the wildlife, plants, and natural processes of the prairie ecosystem as you take a guided journey through COD’s prairie restorations. COD biology faculty members will lead the tours.  Participants will learn to identify some of the more than 100 species of native Illinois plants found throughout the 18-acre prairie preserve.

Families are welcome. Meet at the northwest trailhead of the Russell R. Kirt Prairie, near the west end of the Health and Science Center. It is suggested that participants arrive a short while before start time. Parking is available in Fawell Lot D. View Prairie Tour map.
