Physician Office Coding and Billing

The College of DuPage Health Information Technology (HIT) program offers a certificate to help prepare students to code and bill for physician offices. Physician Office Coding and Billing graduates are employed in physician offices, billing companies and insurance offices. They may even work from home.

To become a certified coder, the following agencies administer coding examinations:

American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
and
American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)

Both AHIMA and AAPC have local testing sites for students to take their coding examinations. Individuals who pass the coding examination(s) are then designated as a certified or credentialed coder and must pay annual dues and meet continuing education requirements to retain the credential.

A popular credential with employers is the CCS-P which stands for Certified Coding Specialist – Physician based. Depending upon work history and experience, the CCS-P examination may require additional coursework. For full details, go to: www.ahima.org/certification/ccsp

Another popular credential with employers is the CPC which stands for Certified Professional Coder. Depending upon work history and experience, the CPC examination may require additional coursework. For full details, go to: https://www.aapc.com/certification/cpc/

The credentials CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist for Physician based) may be obtained after passing the certification exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association.
