Brittany DeCicco originally pursued a pre-med track at Loyola University.

“I have always been drawn to medicine, inspired by its potential to alleviate suffering and enhance lives,” she said. “However, it was during my rotations in radiation therapy that I found my true calling. The fusion of cutting-edge technology and compassionate patient care captivated me. I saw how radiation therapists were not only treating a disease but were also providing hope and support to patients and their families during some of the most challenging times of their lives.”

Inspired by this revelation, DeCicco switch to College of DuPage, where she completed an associate degree in Diagnostic Medical Imaging Radiography and certificates in Radiation Therapy and Proton Therapy. Her career began in radiography, where she spent two years honing her skills and completing a Radiation Therapy degree. This was followed by positions with several health care organizations in radiation oncology, serving as a radiation therapist for nearly eight years.

“I had the honor of treating a diverse range of patients, from a 6-month-old infant to a 103-year-old, each patient leaving an indelible mark on my heart. My work involved not only delivering precise and effective treatments but also providing emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families. Additionally, with radiation oncology, I have held many roles, including clinical instructor and clinical applications specialist. These roles allowed me to collaborate closely with technological advancements in cancer treatment, enhancing my understanding and appreciation of the intricate relationship between technology and patient care.”

Teaching became a natural extension of her passion for radiation therapy. DeCicco realized that she wanted to share her knowledge and experiences with the next generation of health care professionals.

I hope my students never forget the immense power they hold to change the world and save lives every day.

“I hope my students never forget the immense power they hold to change the world and save lives every day. With this power comes a great responsibility to treat all cancer patients with the utmost respect and empathy. I want them to understand that every patient is a unique individual with their own story, deserving of compassionate care.”

DeCicco has found inspiration in her patients. Their resilience, courage and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity continually remind her of the importance of her work. She also finds constant support and inspiration from her colleagues and mentors in the field, while her family—especially her husband and children—give her the strength and motivation to pursue her dreams and make a difference in the world.

“Every step of this journey has reinforced my passion for radiation therapy and solidified my belief that this is the path I am meant to follow,” she said. “Each day, I have the privilege of shaping and inspiring the next generation of health care professionals who will carry forward the torch of compassion and excellence in patient care. Their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas bring new energy and optimism to our field, promising continued advancements in treatment and patient support. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I am not only contributing to their education but also to the betterment of countless future patients.
