Student Stories: David Kalet

David Kalet

Major: Accounting

David Kalet knows exactly when he decided to become a certified public accountant.

“Shortly after completing my MBA in 2001, the Enron scandal and its subsequent bankruptcy underlined the importance of fairly reporting financial performance,” he said. “The subsequent passage of the Sarbanes Oxley Act solidified my plans to become a CPA.”

Kalet enrolled at College of DuPage and completed the 28 hours in accounting coursework that he needed to help meet the requirements to sit for the CPA exam.

“Convenience of location and having a choice of attending classes on weekends and in the evenings was a major consideration in selecting COD,” he said. “I liked the fact that most of the professors had practical experience in industry and with accounting firms. It was comforting to me that many of my co-students were mature, non-traditional students who, like me, were looking to augment their skills to become a CPA. And finally, the low cost of tuition convinced me that this was easily affordable.

“The staff was focused on teaching skills needed to pass the CPA exam. Many of the exam questions were based on the CPA exam bank. We were encouraged to use current employment problems as the subject for assigned projects that reinforced our understanding of the material and helped me advance my career with my current employer.”

Kalet felt completely prepared to sit for the CPA exam, which he passed. The CPA credential allowed him to make a career change into accounting and finance.

He praises College of DuPage for providing a high-quality experience in preparing people to sit for the CPA exam.
