Kyoto and Osaka, Japan Study Abroad

NOTE: The month-long Japan Language and Cultural Immersion Study Abroad is on hiatus for 2025 and will return in a new format for summer 2026.

NEW short-term program for Summer 2025: Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Japan on a 12-day summer field study. Examine Japan's traditional and modern cultural values while visiting major landmarks in and around Kyoto. Observe traditional theaters and cultural practices while visiting Osaka, Shiga, and Nara. Attend "EXPO 2025 OSAKA," Kyoto Gion Festival, Osaka Tenjin Festival and Tanukidani Fire Walking Festival. Students are expected to use their Japanese language skills to communicate while in Japan. Note: This program involves substantial (average 20,000 steps per day) walking on street, uneven surfaces, and stairs.

Enroll in JAPAN 2251 FS085 (Summer 2025, 3 credit hours.) No additional study abroad application is required. Student should have completed one Japanese language course prior to departure.

  • Program Dates: Friday, July 18 to Tuesday, July 29, 2025
  • Fee: $3,995 includes round trip airfare from Chicago, most transportation in Japan, hotel accommodations with breakfast, some excursions and entrance fees. Tuition (3 credits) is extra.
  • Passport Information: If you do not have a passport, or your passport expires within six months of the program dates, you MUST apply for a passport or renew your passport immediately. Passports can take up to four months to obtain. Do not wait until you are accepted into the program.
