Generative AI

Generative AI (GAI) is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content—like text, images, or code—based on patterns it has learned from data. Tools like ChatGPT and DALL·E can assist with tasks ranging from writing and lesson planning to generating creative materials.

In education, generative AI offers exciting opportunities to enhance teaching and learning but also raises questions about academic integrity and critical thinking. Explore the resources on this page to learn how to use generative AI thoughtfully in your teaching practice.

Classroom AI Policies

College of DuPage Instruction Committee recommends that all instructors update their syllabi to include a statement on the use or non-use of generative AI (GAI) in their class–regardless of whether or how you allow students to use GAI. This policy should be grounded in the intellectual work of the particular course, your discipline, and your understanding of critical thought. Faculty should avoid the use of GAI detection software because it is unreliable, biased, and becomes outdated very quickly.

For the steps on how to create a GAI policy for your class, see the Instruction Committee document "Recommended Guidelines for Generative AI Policy Creation."

Professional Development

While much of the conversation regarding generative artificial intelligence (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, DALL-E, etc.) in higher education has focused on the nefarious ways in which these tools might be used by students, less attention has been paid to how we can incorporate these tools into our courses and pedagogy. Please join us for a panel discussion where faculty will share how they are incorporating generative AI into their pedagogy and classrooms. Facilitated by: Jeannie Anderson (English), Casey Emerich (OTI), Fonda Ginsburg (English), Tim Henningsen (English), and Alyssa Pasquale (Engineering)

Explore the rapid evolution of teaching practices in response to generative AI tools like ChatGPT and join our expert panel of educators from diverse disciplines to address academic integrity and pedagogical challenges. Gain the knowledge and insights to enhance your teaching in an ethical and student-centered way.
