Workshops
The FPD Program encourages all faculty members to share their pedagogical expertise through learning opportunities like workshops, webinars, discussions, and presentations. These events generally run from 50-minutes to 2-hours and can be face-to-face or synchronous online.
Faculty development sessions should:
- be interactive and collaborative;
- share practical, evidence-based best practices on pedagogical themes;
- encourage participants to try new things in the classroom.
Proposals may be submitted directly to the Faculty Chair of Professional Development or by using this form.
Required Professional Development Hours
Tenured, full-time faculty are required to complete 6 clock hours of internally-offered professional development annually. Required PD hours represent an opportunity for full-time faculty to develop, deliver, and participate in professional development offerings designed for us, by us as well as contribute to creating a culture of faculty development around teaching, learning, and practice at College of DuPage.
PD hour-eligible learning opportunities are meant to be rather focused and relatively succinct (30 - 90 minutes) and should:
- be interactive and collaborative;
- share practical, evidence-based best practices on pedagogical themes;
- encourage participants to try new things in the classroom.
PD hour-eligible offerings will be reviewed by the Faculty Professional Development Advisory Committee (FPDAC) and made available for registration in the Cornerstone system. A schedule of PD offerings will be made available at the beginning of each semester and is subject to review by the Provost’s office.
Participating in PD
Full-time faculty may earn required PD hours by attending internally-offered workshops, classes, and presentations not otherwise compensated through direct reimbursement or alternative credit.
Examples include but are not limited to:
- Instruction committee panel presentations;
- FPD-mediated webinar discussions;
- Online, face-to-face, and hybrid sessions offered through the FPD program
- FPD partner sessions, workshops, and classes (Learning Technologies, Office of Assessment, etc.).
Delivering PD
Full-time faculty interested in facilitating PD hour-eligible learning opportunities are invited to design and deliver workshops, webinars, classes, and presentations not otherwise compensated through direct reimbursement or alternative credit.
Examples include but are not limited to:
- Instruction committee panels;
- Online, face-to-face, or hybrid sessions offered through the FPD program.
In order to support the development of new professional development opportunities, facilitators will earn 2x the clock hours of PD hour-eligible offerings the first time they offer a session (60-minute workshop = 120 minute PD hour score). The facilitation of subsequent sessions will provide an hour score equivalent to clock hours (60-minute workshop = 60 minute PD hour score).
Proposals for Developing and Delivering PD
Proposals for developing and delivering PD hour-eligible offerings should be submitted to the Faculty Chair of Professional Development and must include:
- Title and description;
- Type of offering (class, workshop, session, panel);
- Modality of offering (online, hybrid, f2f, virtual);
- Hour score in minutes (30, 60, 120, etc.).
Learning Technology/Assessment sessions, workshops, and classes are exempt from this process.
The FPDAC will publicize deadlines for PD proposals and share periodic calls from the Provost's office for the development of PD offerings to support specific teaching and learning topics.
Role of FPD Advisory Committee
The FPDAC will work with the Provost’s office to ensure the development and scheduling of a sufficient number of offerings on a diversity of topics so that all full-time faculty can fulfill their contractual internal professional development requirements (6 clock hours per year). This may include calls for proposals at different times during the Academic Year.
The committee will review proposals on a regular basis.
Additional Information
Credit-bearing courses offered through the FPD program may be used for either PD hours or credit toward range change (e.g., Best Practices for Instructing/Supporting Students).
Full-time faculty members are expected to complete the 6 hours of PD within the Fall and Spring semesters of the Academic Year which begins with Opening Day Fall Convocation activities and ends the official last day of the Spring semester.
The following learning opportunities are not eligible for the required PD hours:
- External workshops, classes, conferences, and any other events for which faculty are already compensated through credit, alternative credit, tuition reimbursement, or compensated special assignments;
- In-service day offerings;
- Courses provided through Continuing Education.
