About John Paris

Background

John Paris, Associate Professor of History, has been at COD for the last 24 years. During that time he has taught and/or developed various courses in Latin American History, U.S. History and Western Civilization. He also served as Co-Director of the 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2019 COD Costa Rica Study Abroad Programs. John has served as Chair of the Carter Carrol Excellence in History Award Committee, Native American Studies Committee, Latin American Studies Committee, Coordinator of the Global Hot Spots faculty presentation series 2016-17 and has also taught and worked in the COD Honors Program. He has presented frequently for the COD History Department including: 

  • "Teaching Frida: Connecting Frida Kahlo to the Curriculum" - Spring 2020 COD In-Service
  • "Curriculum and Pedagogical Methods of Teaching American Government and U.S. History in the Middle School, High School, and College Levels" - 2019 Illinois Political Science Association Conference
  • "Tippecanoe and Twitter Too!: The Development of the Image of President of the United States 1789-2018" - various times in 2018
  • The 2015 Carter Carroll Excellence in History keynote presentation, "Gender Equality in Nicaragua" 
  • "Enhancing Student Learning through the Use of Visual Images in the US History Classroom" at the 2009 Community College Humanities Association National Conference
  • Various History Department panel discussions 2009-17

John has participated in and promoted the International Negotiation Modules Project (INMP) 2012-2020 at College of DuPage. He helped develop and facilitate Service Learning and Assessment components of the Costa Rica Summer Study Abroad program. John was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award for Humanities and Speech Communication Subdivision of Liberal Arts.
