Anxiety is a mental state of intense worry and apprehension about an aversive event that might potentially happen in the near future. Anxiety can sometimes occur around situations in which a person would have to perform a task, such as take tests or speak publicly.
When symptoms of anxiety become severe, they can develop into anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social phobia and other phobias. The good news is that help is available.
There are different symptoms that can indicate the presence of anxiety among individuals. The list below but shows some of the more common symptoms, though it is not meant to be an exhaustive list. If you feel that your anxiety might be impeding your functioning in college and other areas of your life, talk to a counselor.

- Difficulty controlling the worry
- Muscle tension

- Sleep disturbance
- Panic attacks
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
