College of DuPage launched a certificate program this semester to provide students streamlined access to hands-on experience in working on cars, alongside veteran instructors.
The Entry Level Automotive Service Technology Certificate teaches students how to diagnose and maintain vehicles in the industry. Once they complete the program, they will be ready to take the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation tests they need to begin working in their careers.
COD Automotive Technology program Coordinator Joe Aranki said the entry-level certificate offers an alternative flexible path that complements the Master Automotive Service Technology Advanced Certificate. Both offer unparalleled experience.
“The automotive industry needs more technicians, and this certificate offers the core skills students need to get off to a great start in the world of cars,” he said. “Students can then build on their experience by taking the advanced classes we offer through the Master certificate.”
Students completing the Entry Level Automotive Service Technology Certificate will take Engine Design and Operation, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Automotive Electrical I and II, Suspension, Steering and Alignment; Braking Systems; Automotive Air Condition and Heating; Engine Controls & Emissions I; Automatic Transmission; and Automotive Service. All classes offer hands-on experience.
Before completing the 31-credit program, students can complete an independent study, internship or additional course. The elective courses include hybrid vehicles’ technology, on-board diagnostics, diesel technology and welding.
The Master Automotive Service Technology Advanced Certificate, conversely, allows students to learn even more about vehicles’ construction and functions, including diagnosis and testing of suspension and chassis systems.
“We’re proud of our students, regardless of which certificate they wish to complete,” said Aranki. “We look forward to seeing their accomplishments in the field.”
COD’s Automotive Service Technology Program also offers an Automotive Service Manager Certificate and a Master Automotive Service Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree, and is accredited by the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation.
