Days/Hours Available for Service Learners

Because Gentiva Hospice delivers clinical excellence and extraordinary care 24/7 we are extremely flexible to meet the needs of the student. They are able to make their own hours based on their availability, and same days/times are not required.

Description of Service Learner Role

There are many volunteer opportunities with Gentiva Hospice in order to help guide students in receiving experience in any field they may be interested in developing skills. Gentiva also has special volunteers providing pet therapy, art/music therapy, relaxation/wellness therapy and is also level V partner with We Honor Veterans and provides Veteran-to-Veteran visits. Students may also use their area of expertise/interest during patient visits in order to decrease isolation. The possibilities are endless and may include simple conversation or reading to a patient, participating in activities, playing a card game, playing music or an instrument, helping with an art project or scrapbook, etc. This opportunity will not only make an impact on the patient and family but on the student's as well.

Organization Requirements

Volunteers must be 18 years old. Medicare and Gentiva Hospice require all volunteers to complete a background check/fingerprint, drug screening, general physical and 2 step TB test (or Quanitferon Gold blood draw) at no cost to the volunteer along with required training to determine competency. We ask that the volunteers visit the patient for the duration of the semester, even if the required hours have been met to ensure quality of care to our patients.
