CNC Operator I Apprentice, Bensenville

Project Hire-Ed is partnering with a local organization to hire a CNC Operator 1 apprentice. 

Reports to:  Shift Supervisor
Classification:  Non-Exempt
Location:  Bensenville, IL

Position Purpose

The process of making cutting tools is at the core of our organization.  The CNC Operator I will operate computer numerical control (CNC) machines to perform various machine functions.  This position transforms a blank into a quality cutting tool.

Essential Functions

  1. Follows all factory procedures in regards to safety, production and quality
  2. Reads and interprets blueprints and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, control settings and machining methods and sequences
  3. Loads tool blanks in machine
  4. Starts machine and monitors displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions
  5. Stops machine to change cutting tools and setup according to required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications to .002 tolerances
  6. Collect Total Indicator Reading (TIR) Measurements (circular run out) for tool to .002
  7. Critical thinking skills – determine the relationship between two measurements – for example: diameter in front vs. diameter in back within tolerance of prints
  8. Use of Winslow, Helicheck, and other tools for measurement readings
  9. Visually inspects and measures standard tools
  10. Adjusts machine (size) or alerts supervisor as necessary
  11. Cleans machine, tooling, parts, and work area
  12. Alerts supervisor or setup personnel of any errors, conditions, or problems to affecting quality, safety, or performance
  13.   Demonstrate commitment to company values and show a strong sense of cooperation and willingness to work in a team environment
  14. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or equivalent
  2. Basic knowledge of computers

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of cutting tools
  2. Previous experience in manufacturing work environment

Physical Working Demands

To perform the duties of this job, an individual must be able to read, write, and understand and communicate by telephone using the English language.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time (3-4 hours at a time) on concrete.  Must be able to lift and maneuver weights up to 50 pounds.  Must be able to work in a dusty environment.  Some tasks require use of personal protection equipment, which may occasionally include: dust masks, gloves, glasses, goggles, and hearing protection.

Specific vision abilities required to this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  

Working Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but is a manufacturing environment with dust and oil present throughout the location.  Most of the workplace is in a temperature-controlled environment with better than adequate lighting.
