Launch a Career in Cardiac Care

Electrocardiography (EKG) technicians play a vital role in patient care by performing non-invasive cardiac tests that help detect and monitor heart conditions. Technicians measure pulse and blood pressure, record the heart’s electrical activity, conduct stress tests and perform Holter monitor testing. These procedures produce visual tracings that give healthcare providers critical insight into how the heart is functioning.

The Non-Invasive Electrocardiography certificate program is an intensive, three-semester pathway that prepares students for immediate entry into the workforce. Coursework in both basic and advanced EKG is paired with a clinical experience designed to meet certification and employment standards. The program is ideal for students launching a healthcare career as well as current professionals looking to expand or update their cardiac testing skills.

The program also includes telemetry training, preparing students to monitor patients at risk for abnormal heart rhythms—most often in coronary care and hospital settings. Telemetry technicians play a key role in continuous patient monitoring and early detection of cardiac events.

Registration Information

The EKG program is closely aligned with the Phlebotomy program at College of DuPage. For more information on how to get started in the EKG program, read through the EKG Registration Packet and watch the information session video.

Students are expected to provide proof of a Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan prior to the start of the program or clinical start for PTA and SLPA. The insurance plan must cover you throughout the length of your clinical experience, which is most cases, consists of the entire length of the program. Important Dates

  • November 1 through January 15: Open Enrollment
    If you will need health insurance ANYTIME within the next year, you must apply during the current open enrollment period.
  • December 15: Deadline to enroll in a plan that will start January 1.
  • January 15: Deadline to enroll in a plan that will start February 1.
  • After January 15: Enrollment is closed.

If you miss open enrollment, but have a qualifying life event, you can still apply during a Special Enrollment Period.

While we cannot guarantee your official acceptance into the program, you need to be aware that there is short timeframe of when you are able to purchase a Health Insurance plan. The purpose of this step is to make you aware and that the time to research and purchase is NOW. Purchasing health insurance outside of this timeframe will take months and may prohibit your admittance into the Program. NOTE: Obtaining Health Insurance is NOT an application requirement but it is a requirement to be in the program.

Non-Invasive Electrocardiography Technician

The Non-Invasive Electrocardiography Technician certificate program prepares students to work in cardiology performing non-invasive cardio graphic tests, including EKGs, holter monitors and treadmill stress testing.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) exam through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

The Illinois Community College Board has allocated funds through the Pipeline for the Advancement of the Healthcare Workforce Program (PATH) for select health science programs at COD.
