Real Estate

The real estate curriculum at College of DuPage meets the needs of students that would like to begin a career in the real estate industry. The curriculum includes courses mandated by the State of Illinois that prepare students to take the exams for obtaining either a real estate broker license or a managing broker license.

Real Estate Broker License

In order to qualify for an Illinois Real Estate Broker License, students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Successfully complete the following required coursework with strict attendance requirement of 75 classroom hours:
    • Real Estate Broker Pre-License Topics (60 classroom hours) (PROED 1130)
    • Real Estate Broker Pre-License Applied Real Estate Principles (15 classroom hours) (PROED 1131)
  • Pass the Illinois Real Estate Broker Examination

Real Estate Broker Pre-Licensing Courses

Real Estate courses meet the new (75-hour) state-approved curriculum. 

This is a 60-hour required course to take the Illinois Real Estate Broker License Examination.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age to take State exam

  • Have a Social Security Number of Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Successfully complete the required coursework with strict attendance requirement of 75 classroom hours

Real Estate Broker Post-Licensing

The 45-hour Broker Post-License Requirement (composed of three, 15-hour courses) needs to be completed for your first renewal. The three required courses address core topics essential to the development of a newly-licensed real estate broker, including:

  • Illinois License Law
  • Agency Obligations and Disclosure
  • Purchase Agreements
  • Fair Housing, Antitrust and Transaction Handling
  • Working with Buyers and Sellers
  • Risk Management, Ethics, Advertising and Professional Development

If you were originally licensed on or after Nov. 1, 2021, you need to complete this 45-hour post-licensing course series for your first license renewal period ending April 30. The three required courses (15 hours each) address core topics essential to the development of a newly licensed real estate broker. Evening classes are available.

Post-License Courses

Real Estate courses meet the (45-hour) state-approved curriculum.

This course will satisfy 15 hours of the 45 required broker-post license requirements. Applied Brokerage Principals will train agents how to use the laws learned and apply them to the real estate business. Practical applications to the Real Estate Licensing Act and Administrative Rules with are learned. Concepts of agency, escrow, advertising, brokerage services, real estate related tax issues, business skills, and working in a team environment will be covered in an interactive format using case studies and instruction to bring these issues to life.
This course will satisfy 15 hours of the 45 required broker-post license requirements. Lecture and case studies will be used to reinforce the importance of risk management in the areas of agency, fair housing, disclosures, antitrust, sexual harassment prevention, escrow issues, marketing and advertising, and insurance. Information on grounds for discipline on state and federal levels and the disciplinary process will be learned in an interactive manner.

This course will satisfy 15 hours of the 45 required broker-post license requirements. Case studies and scenarios along with lecture will help students gain the practical knowledge needed in real estate transactions. This class will focus on buyer and seller issues including pricing, CMAs, seller and buyer counseling, qualifying buyers, and showing property. Students will review the essential elements of listing, buyer agency, and sales contract formation. Negotiating issues such as offer formation, counteroffers, and multiple offer scenarios will be taught in a situational manner along with other common issues such as inspections, appraisals, and closing requirements. Property management and leases for both residential and commercial property will be discussed.

Participants will learn how to evaluate key factors such as commission structures, training and mentorship programs, company culture, technology tools, and lead generation support. By the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of how to assess brokerages to find the best fit for their unique needs and aspirations in the real estate industry. Whether you're just starting out or looking to switch brokerages, this course provides the knowledge and insights to make an informed decision. Course materials included in course fee.

Real Estate Managing Broker License

  • Maintain an Illinois Real Estate Managing Broker License for at least two years
  • Be at least 20 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent
