Advising for New Students

students in class

As a new student, Advising Services is here to help you get started on the right path and work toward achieving your academic, transfer and career goals. Whether you plan to transfer to a four-year institution or enter the workforce after your studies, taking the right courses at the right time is key to your success.

Before Meeting with an Advisor

To make the most of your first advising appointment, complete the following steps:

Submit Transcripts and Test Scores to Verify Course Placement

Make sure your official high school or college transcripts, and/or your SAT or ACT scores and AP scores, have been received and evaluated by the Office of Student Records. You’ll receive an email from Student Records once this process is complete. This step confirms your eligibility to schedule your advising appointment. Placement helps ensure you begin the courses that best match your current skills.

Visit Reading and Writing Placement for details on approved methods for placement.

Complete Math Placement (ALEKS Test)

Contact Testing Services to complete the ALEKS math placement test.

This step is required for students who are seeking a degree and/or intend to transfer.

Note: If you are a new student who cannot meet one of the reading/writing placement requirements, contact our office at (630) 942-2259 for assistance.
