COD Scholarships for Study in English and Related Fields

Purpose

Supports students pursuing any career field who recognize the importance of writing in 21st-century contexts.

Eligibility Requirements

• Live within District 502.
• Be currently enrolled or planning to enroll at College of DuPage.
• Be enrolled in or planning to enroll in at least 12 credit hours.
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Submit a brief essay or video explaining their career goals and how writing and technology will play a role in achieving them.
• Submit a letter of recommendation, preferably from a former professor or high school teacher.

Preference

Preference will be given to students who recognize the importance of writing in 21st-century contexts, regardless of their field of study.

Additional Requirement

Recipients must meet with the donor if requested. The meeting will be scheduled at a mutually agreed-upon date, time and location. Failure to attend the meeting may result in the scholarship award being withdrawn by the College of DuPage Foundation.

Purpose

Supports students serving as editors of the Prairie Light Review at College of DuPage. The scholarship was established by Allan Carter, professor emeritus and founder of the Prairie Light Review, and Gina Carter, a College of DuPage alumna.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be enrolled in English 2210: Literary Journal: Prairie Light Review during the scholarship semester.

Application Requirement

Applicants must submit an essay or video by midnight Nov. 1 describing how they will:

• Select works for publication fairly and equitably.
• Celebrate the union of written and artistic works in Prairie Light Review.
• Work effectively with fellow editors in the class.

Award

Purpose

Honors students majoring in English, journalism or a related field who demonstrate excellence in writing and communication. The scholarship is funded by The Wattis Foundation in memory of Lloyd David and Carlye Cannon Wattis.

Eligibility Requirements

• Major in English, journalism or a related field.
• Demonstrate excellence in writing and/or communication.
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
• Be a resident of District 502.
• Submit a writing sample as part of the application process.

Preference

Preference will be given to full-time students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours during the applicable semester.

Purpose

Encourages aspiring writers by helping cover tuition, books and fees. The scholarship is funded by the John and Leona Budilovsky Trust and is open to College of DuPage students from all majors.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be a College of DuPage student.
• Submit an original feature story, preferably autobiographical.
• Submit an autobiographical essay of 250 words or fewer.

Essay Topic Suggestions

Applicants may write about one of the following topics or another meaningful aspect of their personal journey:

A Significant Experience

Reflect on a pivotal event that shaped your values, passions or goals. Explain what you learned and how the experience prepared you for college.

A Motivating Adventure

Describe a meaningful experience, such as travel, employment or volunteer service, that inspired you to pursue higher education.

Overcoming Adversity

Discuss a challenge related to family, health, finances or another obstacle, and explain how you overcame it and what you learned.

A Change in Perspective

Share an experience that changed the way you view the world, such as exposure to a new culture, viewpoint or life circumstance.

Essays should be concise, reflective and focused on personal growth. Applicants may address topics beyond the examples listed above.

Purpose

Honors the memory of Writing, Reading and Speech Assistance (WRSA) coach Isreal "Izzy" Malave by supporting future educators. The scholarship is sponsored by the Tutoring and Academic Support Center and WRSA.

Eligibility Requirements

• Be currently enrolled at or admitted to College of DuPage.
• Be pursuing a degree in education.
• Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75.
• Submit a written statement of career goals and teaching aspirations (250-500 words).
• Demonstrate financial need, which may be considered as part of the selection process.
