By Angela Mennecke

College of DuPage’s Physical Education, Fitness and Sports Studies department celebrated the opening of its new Kinesiology Lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by College leaders, including members of the Board of Trustees and College President Dr. Muddassir Siddiqi.
One of the first facilities of its kind at a community college in the United States, the Kinesiology Lab is designed to support hands-on learning and innovative instruction. The facility features advanced technology and equipment capable of conducting more than 100 fitness and performance assessments, giving students valuable opportunities to explore exercise science, fitness evaluation and human performance in a modern learning environment.

Jane Vatchev, COD assistant professor and co-chair of Physical EducationThis lab has been a long time coming. We had the idea about three years ago, so we are very excited to see this student learning space come to fruition.
The Kinesiology Lab will support a wide range of courses, including Introduction to Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sports Studies; Living with Health; Applied Kinesiology; Fitness Instructor Training; Personal Fitness Program; Fitness Conditioning; Science of Nutrition; Introduction to Coaching; Boot Camp Fitness; Cardio Kickboxing; Body Sculpting; Weight Training; Performance Nutrition; Healthy Eating; Yoga and Pilates.
COD’s Physical Education, Fitness and Sports Studies program prepares students for careers in teaching, coaching, personal training, strength and conditioning, exercise science, kinesiology, athletic training, sport management, health promotion and wellness.
In 2021, the program’s associate degree in exercise science and kinesiology was ranked number three in the nation. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning to provide students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to transfer to a four-year university or enter the workforce as a personal trainer or sports instructor.
