Growing up, Cynthia Zuniga did not have a consistent support system.

“I was the invisible problem child and because of this, I struggled to see my own potential,” she explained.  

Zuniga initially attended a four-year university but was told she would never succeed. She quit and entered the workforce, at one point working a noon to 9 p.m. shift at McDonald’s that left her with little time to do anything other than sleep.

My experiences at College of DuPage have shaped me into a more resilient and motivated individual.

“I felt like the biggest disappointment. I was stuck at a standstill and working without a clear sense of direction,” she said. “Then one day, I decided to take a risk and apply to go back to school. Little did I know this would become a turning point in my life and the beginning of a new chapter.”

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Zuniga embraced new opportunities at College of DuPage. During New Student Orientation, she engaged with others, which led to a position at the COD Police Service Desk, where she helped people navigate campus, answered questions and supported those who may be overwhelmed or reporting concerns. Through the experience Zuniga developed strong communication and de-escalation skills, which will help her with her chosen career in law enforcement.

She managed to navigate everything while at COD—working two jobs, completing her coursework and volunteering as a youth soccer coach.

“I discovered a level of discipline and determination I didn’t know I had,” she said. “The support from faculty and the campus resources helped me stay motivated and focused on my goals. Throughout my time at COD, not only did I develop academically but also personally, gaining confidence, staying disciplined and having a clearer sense of purpose.”

After graduating and being named one of the outstanding graduate finalists, Zuniga plans to start her career in a position with a police department and pursue a bachelor’s degree. She is grateful for the impact COD made on her life, and her goal is to give back to the campus community, perhaps by serving with the College’s Police Department.

“When I began my journey at COD, I struggled with a lack of motivation and questioned whether I truly belonged in a college environment,” she said. “Over time, with the support of faculty and the resources available, I finally became proud of who I am and all the accomplishments I’ve done in my life.

“My experiences at College of DuPage have shaped me into a more resilient and motivated individual, and I now carry a strong belief in my ability to continue growing and achieving my goals. For the first time, I didn’t feel invisible. I feel like someone who actually belongs, and I’ve never felt more seen.”
