When Matthew Sioson was 8 years old, he began having severe headaches.

For about a month, they were nonstop, excruciatingly painful and getting worse with each day. He finally was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and was rushed by ambulance to the ER at Lurie’s Children Hospital. Following two surgeries and radiation, Sioson’s condition stabilized.

Helping him get through his time in the hospital were art and video games.

I am one step closer to achieving my dream of creating video game art for children in hospitals.

“Video games transported me to a magical world where I could leave behind all the pain,” he said. “I also found joy in art. Lots of mistakes and imperfections make an artwork, but when you step back, they disappear and show nothing but beauty—similar to me.

“During these experiences, everyone showed me nothing but kindness, and this time in my life led me to see the world differently. I want to use my passion for art as a video game artist, not only to share my story but to also help other kids like me.”  

During his senior year in high school, Sioson explored different mediums and techniques that helped him start a portfolio with work that he never knew he could make.

 

“I was telling my story that cannot be fathomed with words alone. My art speaks to my past and is a continued exploration and research of who I am.”

Enrolling at College of DuPage allowed him to continue his journey of self-discovery. Although a shy person, Sioson pushed himself to make friends, get involved and further his leadership skills. He joined the Honors Student Advisory Committee (HSAC), for which he first became the marketing apprentice and then president. He also became a leader for New Student Orientation and helped out monthly at PADS by serving dinner.

In earning his degree, Sioson graduated as an Honors Scholar and was named one of the outstanding graduate finalists. He plans to continue at COD to earn a certificate in machine learning and another degree in game design and animation. He also wants to transfer to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration.

At COD, Sioson found a place that nurtured his talent and provided opportunities for growth.

“Everyone is so kind and caring, and I have only just begun,” he said. “I am one step closer to achieving my dream of creating video game art for children in hospitals. I want to give them the opportunity to feel like a child again, just as art and video games helped me while I was in the hospital at the age of 8. My tumor is a burden I live with every day, but rather than running from it, I’ve learned from it. With my love of art, I want to make a difference in the world.”
