Field Study Class Gets Up-Close Experience With Bats
By Jesus Cortez

As the sun began to set, students enrolled in College of DuPage’s Biology of Bats class watched a colony of big brown bats come to life, soaring around a gazebo in Hammel Woods.
The class tracked the bats using thermal and infrared cameras, as well as a bat detector that converted the bats' echolocation calls into an audible frequency. Through the Biology of Bats course, students also learned about bat diversity, natural history, behavior, echolocation and conservation.
“Sitting in a classroom learning about bats is one thing. But it’s a whole different story being able to see them in real life,” said John Stoddard, adjunct biology faculty member.
